The FIRST step towards finding a Linux driver is identifying the modem's CHIPSET. The scanModem tool will help you. Please download and run the scanModem tool before sending any query to discuss@linmodems.org. The chipset will be recognized and cogent updated knowledge and URLs written out. The manufacturer brand with model number are generally NOT informative in this regard. Modems from a single manufacturer can have different chips. But your documentation may have this critical information, so read it carefully. For PCI card modems, a database can be searched. A broader database is also available. Controller based modems utilize the 'standard' serial drivers, while the winmodems in most newer PCs and laptops require their own drivers. General information on these issues is available at the Linmodem-Howto. Only after your chipset has been identified, should help on configuration & installation issues can be sought from the mailing list discuss@linmodems.org, with archives , wherein discussions are many issues reside."

Vim: Seven habits of effective text editing: "Seven habits of effective text editing
Bram Moolenaar
If you spend a lot of time typing plain text, writing programs or HTML, you can save much of that time by using a good editor and using it effectively. This paper will present guidelines and hints for doing your work more quickly and with fewer mistakes.
The open source text editor Vim (Vi IMproved) will be used here to present the ideas about effective editing, but they apply to other editors just as well. Choosing the right editor is actually the first step towards effective editing. The discussion about which editor is the best for you would take too much room and is avoided. If you don't know which editor to use or are dissatisfied with what you are currently using, give Vim a try; you won't be disappointed."

Helacyton gartleri - Disenchanted Dictionary: "The cancer was caused by the Human papillomavirus, which is a sexually transmitted disease. Most variants of this virus are harmless, but some are known to cause cervical cancer, as in Henrietta's case. After her diagnosis and before attempts to treat the disease with radium, another sample from the tumor was sent to George Gey, who was the head of tissue culture research at Hopkins. Gey discovered that the cells from Henrietta's tumor would not only survive and multiply outside of her body, but they didn't age either. These cells were basically immortal.
And they're still alive, even though Henrietta herself died of the cancer on October 4th, 1951. Now, HeLa cells are about as common in biological research as the lab rat and the petri dish, and are still being grown in an unbroken lineage from the cells originally harvested from Mrs. Lacks in 1951. They're used in cancer research because a scientist can perform experiments on them that otherwise couldn't be done on a living human being. They were also used in the development of the Polio vaccine, making Henrietta somewhat of a posthumous hero to millions."

Lately the skeptics have had a field day. In a Nov. 29 USA Today op-ed piece, John Seigenthaler, a former editorial director at the newspaper, blasted Wikipedia for permitting an anonymous user to write -- incorrectly -- that the journalist had been involved in the Kennedy assassination. Cybersleuths quickly cornered the culprit, who apologized to Seigenthaler, but the incident left many people with the impression Wikipedia is riddled with factual errors and partisan rants."

Freedom to Tinker Blog Archive Make Your Own Copy-Protected CD with Passive Protection: "Make Your Own Copy-Protected CD with Passive Protection
Thursday December 15, 2005 by J. Alex Halderman
Here’s a great gift idea just in time for the holidays: Make your friends and relatives their very own copy-protected CDs using the same industrial-grade passive protection technology built into XCP and Macrovision discs.
Passive protection exploits subtle differences between the way computers read CDs and the way ordinary CD players do. By changing the layout of data on the CD, it’s sometimes possible to confuse computers without affecting ordinary players — or so the theory goes. In practice, the distinction between computers and CD players is less precise. Older generations of CD copy protection, which relied entirely on passive protection, proved easy to copy in some computers and impossible to play on some CD players. For these reasons, copy protection vendors now use active protection — special software designed to block copying.
Discs with XCP or Macrovision protection employ active protection in conjunction with a milder form of passive protection. You can create your own CD with exactly the same passive protection by following a straightforward five-step procedure. I’ll describe the procedure here, and then explain why it works."
Games that use Starforce
Games that use Starforce: "Games that use Starforce
(Released Games/Upcoming Games)
Starforce is a controversial copy-protection system. Reports about destroyed CD ROM devices, unstable or slower-running Windows systems after installing a video game (even after it was removed!), and corrupted drivers as a possible result of Starforce, have made many computer gamers wary of this copy protection technology. There are also many reports from customers that say that Starforce-protected games refuse to work at all with various DVD/CD drives and notebooks.
Older versions of Starforce are not entirely compatible with the 64-bit variant of Windows XP. While publishers can fix this trouble by releasing updates for their games, it is done very rarely. This provides reason to believe that the next Windows generation may also clash with some Starforce versions, in which case one might not be able to play Starforce-protected games smoothly (or at all) unless updates are made available for them."

AlterNet: The 14 Worst Corporate Evildoers: "Corporations carry out some of the most horrific human rights abuses of modern times, but it is increasingly difficult to hold them to account. Economic globalization and the rise of transnational corporate power have created a favorable climate for corporate human rights abusers, which are governed principally by the codes of supply and demand and show genuine loyalty only to their stockholders.
Several of the companies below are being sued under the Alien Tort Claims Act, a law that allows citizens of any nationality to sue in US federal courts for violations of international rights or treaties. When corporations act like criminals, we have the right and the power to stop them, holding leaders and multinational corporations alike to the accords they have signed. Around the world--in Venezuela, Argentina, India, and right here in the United States--citizens are stepping up to create democracy and hold corporations accountable to international law."

Photocritic.org Blog Archive Extreme Macro Photography on a budget: "Extreme Macro Photography on a budget
So, you like the idea of doing macro photography, but you think you can’t afford it? Think again - with less than 1 worth of equipment, a little bit of sweat and tears (and blood, if you, like me, are a bit on the clumsy side), and you can build yourself a surprisingly good macro lens. Don’t believe me? Well, have a look at the article, and think again!
Of course, as I’m using a Pringles can to make this lens, you also have the opportunity to pause for a snack. Now that’s the type of DIY projects I like.
So you want to take pictures of things up close, do you? You have gone tired of all the regular ways of doing so? Ready for bellows and reversing rings, but can’t afford them? Have no fear, there is a far cheaper way to get a reasonably good result!
Also, Before we go any further… Need I say that you do all of this on your own risk? If you chop a finger off, ruin a lens or your camera body, it’s your own fault, and your own problem. Just be really careful, and you should be fine."

Shedding Some Light -- Welcome: "
You do something, visit someplace, see something, or buy something. The experience is not what you expected -- it may have been surprising, or frustrating, or puzzling. So you want to understand. Sometimes the question is Who? Sometimes How? Sometimes Why? You'd like to know more.
These days we all Google for answers. If that doesn't satisfy us, maybe we call people we think can clue us in, or do some research at the library, or hire a private detective. More likely we just let it go, not having the time or patience to pursue every mystery.
Sheddingsomelight.com is a small exercise in understanding. We decided to look at some topics that have come to our attention, gathering enough information to help explain them using only the public resources that all literate citizens have at their disposal. It also turns out to be a collaboration with dozens of other individuals and companies who have assembled some of the bits and pieces and made them available in magazines or newspapers or online.
And in the spirit of that collaboration, we invite contributions of information or guidance, as well as suggestions and criticisms to make our efforts more useful."

TEES: News Story: "Texas A&M electrical engineer says simple scheme can stop electronic eavesdroppers
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- James Bond may use the fanciest, most expensive and high-tech devices to thwart would-be eavesdroppers, but in a pinch, the super-spy can use one Texas A&M engineer's simple, low-cost scheme to keep data secure from the bad guys.
Dr. Laszlo Kish, an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M, proposed that a simple pair of resistors on the ends of a communications wire such as a phone or computer line could keep eavesdroppers from intercepting secret messages. Added electronic disturbances (called 'noise') or the natural thermal noise (called Johnson noise) produced by the resistors makes the scheme function and keep the message secret.
Kish's paper, 'Totally secure classical communication utilizing Johnson(-like) noise and Kirchoff's Law,' in which he proposes his communications scheme, has been accepted for publication in an upcoming issue of the journal Physics Letters A. (A preprint of the paper is available online at http://www.arxiv.org/abs/physics/0509136.) The paper was also featured in a recent issue of Science (vol. 309, p. 2148, 2005). "

It later grew and includes CrackLib and all languages from swedish to japanese. When it was originally posted, the database contained a whopping 5.65 million unique entries weighing in at just over 200 mb. The unexpected popularity of the project led its founder to create a website dedicated to it: GDataOnline.com. "

New Sony CD security risk found | CNET News.com
New Sony CD security risk found | CNET News.com: "Sony BMG Music Entertainment and the Electronic Frontier Foundation digital rights group jointly announced Tuesday that they had found, and fixed, a new computer security risk associated with some of the record label's CDs.
The danger is associated with copy-protection software included on some Sony discs created by a company called SunnComm Technologies. The vulnerability could allow malicious programmers to gain control of computers that have run the software, which is typically installed automatically when a disc is put in a computer's CD drive. "

Schneier on Security: FBI to Approve All Software?
Schneier on Security: FBI to Approve All Software?: "FBI to Approve All Software?
Sounds implausible, I know. But how else do you explain this FCC ruling (from September -- I missed it until now):
The Federal Communications Commission thinks you have the right to use software on your computer only if the FBI approves.
No, really. In an obscure 'policy' document released around 9 p.m. ET last Friday, the FCC announced this remarkable decision.
According to the three-page document, to preserve the openness that characterizes today's Internet, 'consumers are entitled to run applications and use services of their choice, subject to the needs of law enforcement.' Read the last seven words again.
The FCC didn't offer much in the way of clarification. But the clearest reading of the pronouncement is that some unelected bureaucrats at the commission have decreeed that Americans don't have the right to use software such as Skype or PGPfone if it doesn't support mandatory backdoors for wiretapping. (That interpretation was confirmed by an FCC spokesman on Monday, who asked not to be identified by name. Also, the announcement came at the same time as the FCC posted its wiretapping rules for Internet telephony.)"

Poison Water = Hydrogen. New Microbial Genome Shows How
Poison Water = Hydrogen. New Microbial Genome Shows How: "Poison Water = Hydrogen. New Microbial Genome Shows How
Take a pot of scalding water, remove all the oxygen, mix in a bit of poisonous carbon monoxide, and add a pinch of hydrogen gas. It sounds like a recipe for a witch's brew. It may be, but it is also the preferred environment for a microbe known as Carboxydothermus hydrogenoformans.

In a paper published in the November 27th issue of PLoS Genetics, a research team led by scientists at The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) report the determination and analysis of the complete genome sequence of this organism. Isolated from a hot spring on the Russian volcanic island of Kunashir, this microbe lives almost entirely on carbon monoxide. While consuming this normally poisonous gas, the microbe mixes it with water, producing hydrogen gas as waste."

Hours after New Orleans officials announced Tuesday that they would deploy a city-owned, wireless Internet network in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, regional phone giant BellSouth Corp. withdrew an offer to donate one of its damaged buildings that would have housed new police headquarters, city officials said yesterday.
According to the officials, the head of BellSouth's Louisiana operations, Bill Oliver, angrily rescinded the offer of the building in a conversation with New Orleans homeland security director Terry Ebbert, who oversees the roughly 1,650-member police force."

dmiessler.com infoseccerts: "A Guide To Information Security Certifications
I’ve seen the question asked more than a few times recently about what the best information security certifications are. Some people already have one or more and are looking to expand, others are just getting started and want to know how to do so. This page will hopefully offer some help in this area. I’m going to highlight a few of the options and discuss who I think should be going for which, and why.
I’ll be rating each one based on the criteria below:"
