Chrooted SSH HowTo | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials: "Chrooted SSH HowTo
Submitted by falko on Wed, 2006-01-18 08:27. :: Security

This is a 'copy & paste' HowTo! The easiest way to follow this tutorial is to use a command line client/SSH client (like PuTTY for Windows) and simply copy and paste the commands (except where you have to provide own information like IP addresses, hostnames, passwords,...). This helps to avoid typos.

Chrooted SSH HowTo

Version 1.0
Author: Falko Timme
Last edited: 01/18/2006

This tutorial describes how to install and configure OpenSSH so that it will allow chrooted sessions for users. With this setup, you can give your users shell access without having to fear that they can see your whole system. Your users will be jailed in a specific directory which they will not be able to break out of.

This setup is based on a Debian Sarge (Debian 3.1) system, and the chrooted SSH will be installed in such a way that it will still use the configuration files of the standard OpenSSH Debian package which are in /etc/ssh/, and you will be able to use the standard OpenSSH Debian init script /etc/init.d/ssh. Therefore you do not have to create your own init script and configuration file.

I want to say first that this is not the only way of setting up such a system. There are many ways of achieving this goal but this is the way I take. I do not issue any guarantee that this will work for you!"

Tech Prank: Microsoft Word Voodoo Curse: "Step 1
Open Microsoft Word on your victim's computer, then go to the program's AutoCorrect feature (Tools/AutoCorrect), which is designed to catch spelling errors and automatically fix them.

Step 2
Instruct the program to replace the word 'the' with 'thee,' 'but' with 'butter,' or 'of' with 'off.' Then really get creative.

Step 3
Look on as Bob from Customer Service sends a company-wide e-mail that reads: 'Please forward all requests about greasy duck butter and Slavic cabbage fart to the strange mole on my schvontz. Spank you. Cock balls banana.'"

Like many techno-geeks I host my LAMP website on a cheap ($150) computer and my broadband connection. I have also wondered what would happen if my site was linked on Slashdot or Digg. Specifically, would my setup be able to survive the 'Slashdot Effect?' A Pentium 100mhz can easily saturate a T1's worth of bandwidth and my upload speed is capped (supposedly) at 384kbps, so the server should easily be able to handle that. My bandwidth will be saturated before the server is incapacitated, at least that's the idea."

News & Information 'Built on LinuxCOE a powerful set of tools recently open sourced by Hewlett Packard, Instalinux makes installing Linux easier than ever. Typically, installing Linux means donwloading (or buying) one or more ISO images, and then clicking through the install screens. In an effort to make Linux installs easier, some smart folks at HP developed LinuxCOE, where a user could choose some basic options through a web interface, and a small (30MB or less) ISO image is generated that can be used for a 'hands-free' installation using either Kickstart, AutoYAST, or the Debian Preseed autoinstallers. That code has been released as an Open Source project, and the installer component is now available through a free web site, Instalinux .

Benford's Law
Benford's Law: "Dow Illustrates Benford's Law
To illustrate Benford's Law, Dr. Mark J. Nigrini offered this example:

'If we think of the Dow Jones stock average as 1,000, our first digit would be 1.

'To get to a Dow Jones average with a first digit of 2, the average must increase to 2,000, and getting from 1,000 to 2,000 is a 100 percent increase.

'Let's say that the Dow goes up at a rate of about 20 percent a year. That means that it would take five years to get from 1 to 2 as a first digit.

'But suppose we start with a first digit 5. It only requires a 20 percent increase to get from 5,000 to 6,000, and that is achieved in one year.

'When the Dow reaches 9,000, it takes only an 11 percent increase and just seven months to reach the 10,000 mark, which starts with the number 1. At that point you start over with the first digit a 1, once again. Once again, you must double the number -- 10,000 -- to 20,000 before reaching 2 as the first digit.

'As you can see, the number 1 predominates at every step of the progression, as it does in logarithmic sequences.'"

Bits & Pieces: How to make a shiny ball out of mud
Bits & Pieces: How to make a shiny ball out of mud: "I might try this at our Mud Volleyball Tournament this summer.

Mud ball At elementary schools, kindergartens, and preschools all across Japan, kids are losing themselves making hikaru dorodango, or balls of mud that shine. Behind this boom is Professor Fumio Kayo of the Kyoto University of Education. Kayo is a psychologist who researches children's play, and he first came across these glistening dorodango at a nursery school in Kyoto two years ago. He was impressed and devised a method of making dorodango that could be followed even by children. Once Kayo teaches children how to make these mud balls, they become absorbed in forming a sphere, and they put all their energy into polishing the ball until it sparkles. The dorodango soon becomes the child's greatest treasure. Kayo sees in this phenomenon the essence of children's play, and he has written academic papers on the subject. The mud balls could also offer fresh insights into how play aids children's growth.

How to Make Shiny Dorodango
# Pack some mud into your hand, and squeeze out the water while forming a sphere.
# Add some dry dirt to the outside and continue to gently shape the mud into a sphere.
# When the mass dries, pack it solid with your hands, and rub the surface until a smooth film begins to appear.
# Rub your hands against the ground, patting and rubbing the fine, powdery dirt onto the sphere. Continue this for two hours.
# Seal the ball in a plastic bag for three or four hours. Upon removing the sphere, repeat step 4, and then once again seal the sphere in a plastic bag.
# Remove the ball from the bag, and if it is no longer wet, polish it with a cloth until it shines."

World Tracker turns anyone into a cellphone spy - Engadget
World Tracker turns anyone into a cellphone spy - Engadget: "Forget those piddly wiretaps. The next frontier in warrant-free surveillance is upon us, and it's open to everyone. A UK service called World Tracker apparently uses cell tower data (or GPS, when available) to track the location of just about any GSM cellphone. Just enter the number you want to track into the service's handy Google Maps-based interface, and you'll be able to zoom in on the device's location, with accuracy somewhere between 50 and 500 meters. The first time you try to track a phone, a text message is sent to the owner, who must reply in order to enable tracking (we'll leave it to you to figure out how to work around this if you need to track a spouse, kid or employee). The service is currently compatible with O2, Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile in the UK, and has plans to expand to other markets including Germany, Spain, Norway and the US. If, that is, privacy advocates don't shut it down first."

by Brian Fioca
01/19/2006

WASP (Web Application Structure for PHP) is a three-tier framework built on PHP 5. Lately, more software engineers are moving from cumbersome 'enterprise' languages such as Java and C# to languages such as Python and Ruby and PHP. With version 5, PHP has finally reached the point where these developers can feel at home in what used to be considered a hacker's language. By demonstrating that it is possible to create and use complicated, 'enterprise-class' frameworks effectively in PHP 5, WASP will help more developers make the switch."

The Linux HTPC Howto - Basic and Advance Media Center Build Tips
The Linux HTPC Howto - Basic and Advance Media Center Build Tips: "The frontend
A good HTPC has a single frontend software application that the user works with. The frontend should be easy to understand, navigate, and functional. The frontend is also responsible for launching other applications if external functionality is needed. There are two frontends for Linux that do this, Freevo and MythTV. Freevo is a Tivo like application that is aimed at providing the same PVR and DVR like features. MythTV provides the same functionality as Freevo, but it also provides many others also. MythTV is being developed a good bit faster than Freevo, but Freevo is still a good application. Because of this, I recommend MythTV."

STSC CrossTalk - Correctness by Construction: A Manifesto for High-Integrity Software - Dec2005: "
High-integrity software systems are often so large that conventional development processes cannot get anywhere near achieving tolerable defect rates. This article presents an approach that has delivered software with very low defect rates cost-effectively. We describe the technical details of the approach and the results achieved, and discuss how to overcome barriers to adopting such best practice approaches. We conclude by observing that where such approaches are compatible and can be deployed in combination, we have the opportunity to realize the extremely low defect rates needed for high integrity software composed of many million lines of code."

Avoiding image persistence on Apple LCD displays
Avoiding image persistence on Apple LCD displays: "With some Apple LCD displays, if you leave an unchanging image (like a login screen or the same desktop picture) on the screen for a long period of time, you may see a faint remnant of the image even after a new image has replaced it. This is called 'persistence'.

You can prevent image persistence by using the Energy Saver sleep feature to turn off the display when it is not in use, or by using the Screen Saver to make sure that a static image isn't on the display for long periods of time. The Energy Saver sleep feature is very useful because the backlight bulbs are turned off during periods of inactivity, which may prolong their useful life.

In the rare event that an image does become persistent, you can usually get rid of it by following these steps:

1. Temporarily set the Energy Saver sleep setting to 'never sleep'.

2. Display an all-white pattern across the entire display for the same amount of time that the persistent image had been displayed on the screen. To do this:

1. Create an all-white screen in a graphics application such as AppleWorks or Photoshop, and save it as a JPEG file.

2. Use this as the image displayed by the screen saver.

3. Turn the display brightness down (but not off) to preserve backlight bulb life.

3. Verify that the persistent image is gone.

4. If necessary, repeat the process until the persistent image is gone.

5. Restore the Energy Saver settings."
